Calculating the costs in detail, and providing prices for producing plastic injection moulded products, is custom work. It depends on many factors.

For this reason, a supplier like us have extremely specialised software and databases for this puspose. Normally rough estimates can be made. If you know the weight of your product and you know the application, you can make an estimate yourself of the raw materials required.

You can make a very rough estimate for the costs of the materials by multiplying the material costs by a factor of 3. The process of estimation depends on many factors and circumstances which can cause these costs to fluctuate, and is therefore subject to change during the process.

We provide 3D CAD services based on SolidWorks. We also provide advice on manufacturability, material choices and associated costs. On request, we can also supply CAE (Computer Aided Engineering) with regard to flow behaviour, strength, and mechanical properties, via sourcing.

The costs for an injection moulded product can be reduced by analyzing whether and to what extent the most economically attractive raw material can be used while still meeting the functionality. Secondly, it is always advisable to save as much material as possible by making the wall thickness as thin as possible. This has the additional advantage that the process time is also reduced. Thirdly, it is advisable to let several products come out of the mould.

Finally, injection moulding is a mass production process and the standard cost parameters can be minimized by maximizing the batch size and minimizing colour combinations. However, be realistic and base numbers on some facts.

Why is the injection moulding process so expensive?

The injection moulding process is a mass series production process. It is quite possible to produce a low to very low series. We can inject moulds starting at 5 pieces. However, such a batch size has a less attractive pricing. It is important to utilise the advantages that injection moulding can offer, as quickly and efficiently as possible: a larger series with low changeover costs. The latter is partly achieved by using as few colours as possible.

Injection moulding is not expensive, but people often focus on the initial investment costs in the required injection mould. If you think in terms of 5-year sales, and divide the mould costs by the total number of products you sell over that period, it’s not that bad!

Can I use mould injection for my product?

Whether your product can be made technologically is a question that can be answered relatively quickly by our specialists. Our experience is that in general, too much attention is paid to this question in projects (makeability focus). If there are no technological limitations, and they are less common than people think, the focus should be more on a sound marketing strategy.

A saleable product?

Too often we see that people are very preoccupied with ‘how to make the product?’ than with the question ‘how to sell the product?’ and especially ‘at what price’ (the three P’s). Our advice is therefore always “focus on the sale, we will take care of the production”. We often see customers that have either none, or not enough understanding of what is actually possible.

We always give the following as an example: If you request graduated prices from 1,000 – 5,000 – 10,000 – 25,000 pieces from us, you are actually saying that your sales can fluctuate by 2500%! That is of course not realistic.

Is plastic bad for the environment?

Definitely not. In principle, plastic is only bad for the environment if it is released into nature as a disposable.

Recyclable plastic

Most plastics, at least the ones we process, can be recycled and reused. In fact; together with metals, plastic forms an extremely reusable product. For injection moulding we can therefore also use recycled plastic, or partially recycled plastic, for many products.

In addition, the use of recycled material is also good for the cost price structure. For one of our customers, for example, we process more than 600 tons of recycled material every year for just one product! This is better for the environment, and your wallet!
