In principle, we can produce from a single piece, but this depends on the type of product. For relatively easy-to-manufacture products, you should take into account a purchase of several thousand pieces. Complex products, large products, or products with a very high sales value, are often produced in smaller numbers. It is also possible to make agreements for production numbers per year, without having to keep a stock yourself. In that case, AKF Plastics will deliver the products on demand.

We process all thermoplastic injection-moulding materials with the exception of PVC. In addition to environmental and health concerns about this material, our building, machines, and moulds are not suitable for PVC. The first thing to consider is whether plastic is, or could be, the right material for your product. In addition, one must consider how many products are needed, and how complex the design is. In principle injection moulding is based on the following proposition: ‘The technically and economically optimal reproduction of complex 3D designed products that can be made from plastic’. On average, it is often only profitable to inject products from 3000 pieces, due to the costs of developing a mould.

Which materials can be used for injection moulding?

If your product fulfills a simple function with low demands on dimensions, strength, and assembly, you can think of the so-called poly-olefins, such as PP (poly-propylene), PE (poly-ethylene) or PS (poly-styrene) plastics.

These are the ‘simpler’ plastics. If your product needs to be able to do more in these areas, you should think of technical materials such as PA (polyamide, also known as nylon), PC (polycarbonate), ABS (acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene) or POM (polyoxymethylene also known as polyacetal).

If your product is going to be used in an extremely complex and challenging environment in the field of strength, heat, chemicals and dimensional stability, you should start looking at so-called high-tech engineering plastics such as PES (poly-ether-sulfone), PEI (poly-ether-imide) and even PFA (poly-fluoro-acetate).

Plastic is relatively cheap, despite recent price increases. For the simpler poly-olefin plastics, the range is approximately €1.25 – €3.00 per kilogram. For technical plastics, the range is approximately €3.00 – € 8.00 per kilogram. The high-tech engineering plastics can be €50.00 or even €100.00 per kilogram. If you have an idea of the weight of your product, the material costs can easily be estimated.

How can I further reduce the cost of my injection moulded product?

The costs for an injection moulded product can be reduced by analyzing whether and to what extent the most economically attractive raw material can be used while still meeting the functionality. Secondly, it is always advisable to save as much material as possible by making the wall thickness as thin as possible. This has the additional advantage that the process time is also reduced. Thirdly, it is advisable to let several products come out of the mould.

Finally, injection moulding is a mass production process and the standard cost parameters can be minimized by maximizing the batch size and minimizing colour combinations. However, be realistic and base numbers on some facts.
