In principle, the cost of an injection mould starts at around €5,000 and can go up to several hundred thousand euros. Approximately 20% of the cost price of an injection mould consists of purchasing, and the man-hours required for the various processing steps such as engineering and drawing, milling, turning, electrical discharge machining (EDM), drilling, grinding, polishing and assembly work. The costs for an injection mould are primarily determined by the complexity of a product (3D geometry), the projected production number per year, the required lifespan, the number of mould cavities (multiplicity), the method of injection (conventional or by hot-runner) and the possible need for slides (presence of undercuts).

Can I store my mould at AKF Plastics?

Moulds that we put into production in-house generally stay in-house. They are provided with a unique type plate on which you are listed as the owner. The mould remains in our storage for production purposes. We have a separate area within the production hall for this, the so-called mould garden. Our production location is equipped with various security systems with alarm monitoring in the event of a burglary or fire. Nevertheless, something can always happen. The moulds that we store for you as a customer are not covered by our insurance. We therefore advise you to include a clause for these moulds in your own insurance. If you wish, you can also get an official declaration of ownership of the mould.

Of course, your moulds stored with us are used exclusively for you. We will never make products with your injection mould unless you specifically instruct us to do so.

What is the lifespan of an injection mould?

The lifespan of moulds for injection moulding varies, and mainly depends on the materials used. Normally we guarantee a minimum of 100,000 shots maintenance-free with fully hardened production moulds. Between 100,000 and 500,000 shots, additional maintenance may be required. Between 500,000 and 1,000,000 shots, further revision may become necessary. Everything depends entirely on the mould and production volume. If required, this can be determined in advance.

Does AKF provide the required mould maintenance?

When we have your mould in production, we provide ‘standard’ maintenance at no additional cost. Standard maintenance includes: Periodic lubrication, periodic polishing, minor repairs and minor overhauls. For major repairs, major maintenance or major overhaul, we will contact you to discuss any costs. That way, your mould stays in good hands, and you won’t be faced with any surprises.

For many years AKF Plastics has been developing and making high-quality moulds in our own mould factory. In 2020 we decided to further expand our injection moulding capacity, and to fully focus on reducing our operating costs. This allows us to guarantee our competitive prices and high-quality products. Thanks to many years of knowledge and experience, we can ensure the maintenance and improvement of moulds. For purchasing we work together with regular partners and can provide our expertise. You can therefore take advantage of our buyer assistance services.

When a decision is made to purchase a mould, we will work with you and our European mould building partners to achieve your goals. AKF Plastics is then responsible for the delivery of the mould, the cost of which is taken into account in the purchasing strategy. At the very least, we remain involved as project supervisor.

Sometimes we provide mould constructions in-house. Whether out-sourced or in-house, local test spraying is always supervised by us. In addition, the purchased moulds are tested in the Netherlands and further optimized by, or under the supervision of AKF Plastics.

Yes, we can do that for you. We only supply first-class quality moulds, and in order to guarantee this, we only supply injection moulds from Western Europe, along with a guarantee. It is also possible for you to provide us with your own mould from which we can manufacture your products for you.

How do I know what kind of mould I need, and what it will cost?

An injection mould is a piece of tooling that is needed to make your product. In order to arrive at the correct layout and construction of your mould, we first of all look at the complexity of the product, and in particular, what is required geometrically to be able to make it.

Next, we look at how many products are needed each year, and how long the project will run. We also explore whether several products can be combined in one mould.

These analytics provide an overview of the best layout for the required mould. Then sourcing commences for purchasing the relevant mould.

A considerable investment is required for injection moulding. For moulds from low-wage countries, these costs are in the range of around €5,000 – 20,000.

For more complex injection moulds from Europe, the range is around €20,000-100,000. Very large and/or complex moulds can exceed €100,000.
